Journey to Nova Scotia

I stand before this place for the first time

and find that my heart has been here all along

The first foggy light of dawn caresses the rocky coast…

and I thrill to the sweeping vistas of lakes and coves,

forests and marshes and always the sea.

Sheltering harbors washed by endless tides look faded in morning mist

but glow in the warmth of midday sun.

Fishermen search the sea for its bounty,

building a landscape of lobster pots and fishing sheds

clinging to the edge of the sea.

I follow the land that follows the sea, climbing a gentle arc evermore east

where the mountains meet the sea and the sky.

White boned-birch and wind-sheared pine shade woodland brush,

and broad forests edge the tide-scoured shores.

This is where the land and the sea embrace,

partners in a seamless bond, wild and resilient.

Ancient forces carved this craggy coast,

a quarry ledge of granite borders the sea

and speaks to a clash of cosmic forces.

Time, wind and water have worn some of the bedrock boulders to stones.

This is the end of a continent. The con-vergence of earth and sky and the ageless sea.

This is Nova Scotia.
