Facades
For many years I drove the neglected back roads of the Midwest and was drawn to the sparse, simple lines of forgotten landscapes. Black and white captured the character of those landscapes and of the buildings that gave the land its story. Sometimes I used my 4 x 5” view camera and sometimes the quickness of 35mm worked better. But whatever camera I used, it was the stories, the traces of hopes and dreams contained in these structures that spoke to me.
Friends & Lovers
Street photography is how I began. In the early part of my career photographing people was a major focus of my work and being on a newspaper it allowed me an opportunity to spend many of my days just walking the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul looking for moments. Over the years the images began to take on something more significant to me and I noticed how people consistently allowed me inside of their comfort range. This is but a small sample of my collection of friends, lovers and mothers photographs.
In The West
There are elements to black and white photography that are suited to the imagery I make, particularly when working in the West. There’s a stark element to the western landscape and many times it’s best captured by ignoring distracting color and concentrating on it’s underlying themes and structures.
Lonely Road
The human journey has been documented by many photographers worldwide, but there is something in the fleeting moments of life that always catch my attention. I have a dear friend who enjoyed asking, “What does it all mean?” That’s an unanswerable question, but the perseverance of mankind, the day-to-day coming to terms with reality, the loves, lost dreams, or loneliness, are all amazing aspects of the human spirit that help answer some of that question for me.
