Skipjacks glide across the Bay, oystermen and crabbers harvest its bounty, green forests turn to gold, while geese carve a silhouette against an autumn sky.

Chesapeake Fog

The Chesapeake waters have cooled and a fog rests softly over the bay.  Life slows and waits for the sun to burn it off.Original music & video ©2018 Richard Olsenius

A Gathering

Why This Particular Morning?

The Great Fall Migration 5:42

A Gathering

The great marshes along the Chesapeake are almost void now of their summer colors and the stillness of the mornings will soon be broken as their winter guests arrive. What is it that calls the great flocks of ducks, snow geese, and Canada geese to the Chesapeake Bay?

Why is it this particular morning that the flocks begin to arrive as the sun breaks through the low hung clouds. One can only look upward and imagine there is some great force that orchestrates this journey from the distant Far North to the  Salt marshes of the Chesapeake.

Silence of the Marsh

Silence of the
Marsh

Across the vast saltwater marshlands of the Chesapeak, a quiet has settled in. A low rising sun has little strength now to warm the cool mornings. The remaining leaves are finally gone and the gentle autumn breeze will soon be forgotten when the storms called nor’easters track along the Atlantic Coast. It’s only a matter of time now before the great flocks of Snow and Canada geese arrive from the north breaking the silence of the autumn marsh.

Waiting for the
Snow

What is it about the first snow? A childish anticipation perhaps, a visual treat for a landscape that has gone brown and barren, or an acknowledgement that nature still has this final act in her play of seasons.Winter wraps the marsh in a veil of white surrounded by edges of lacy ice.

The early snow softens the reeds, spartina and other grasses that fall had left dry and sharp-edged. It softens the sounds of the marsh, from the calls of ducks and geese, to tundra swans finishing their long trip from the Arctic plains. The winter marks a final chapter in the the seasons, a quiet interlude before the geese get restless and head northward once again. This Chesapeake winter is all the more beautiful because it is  a fleeting study of life slowed in muted colors and designs in their barest forms.Original music & video ©2018 Richard Olsenius
