Before The Mast

Schooner racing on the Chesapeake Bay has it’s beginnings in the rivalry between Baltimore, Maryland, at the northern end of the Bay, and Portsmouth/Norfolk, Virginia, at the southern end. The commercial competition to get their cargo to port before others led to what is now known as the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Cargo, of course, is no long hauled on these classic boats, but their magnificence can still be felt every fall when they gather to race from Annapolis, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia.
